Suzi
Quatro
Suzi Quatro
was born as Susan Kay Quatro on June 3rd, 1950 in Detroit as daughter
of Helen and Art Quatrocchi. She was raised there along with her
two sisters and her brother. Her father had his own band called
Art Quatro Trio. At the age of 8 Suzi made her first performance
with her father. After that she started to take piano lesions.
At the age of 14 she moved away from the classic music towards
Rock n' Roll. She became member of the band Pleasure Seekers,
where she played the bass and called herself Suzi Soul. She shared
this band with her sisters.
They soon
produced a single with the track Never Thought You'd Leave Me/What
a Way to Die witch was successful in Detroit. Already their second
single was recorded for the label Mercury an even bigger success,
this time not only in Detroit.
In 1971 the
band renamed itself to Cradle and started to play harder rock
than before. During this time music producer Mickie Most started
to observe the band and invited Suzi to England to work on her
solo career.
Late in 1971 she arrived in London and they started to write songs
and started with the recordings. Even though it took two years
till the debut album was finished and released. The album didn't
have success in England, but made it number one in the Portuguese
charts in 1973. She founded a band and started a tour after that.
In 1973 two
new songwriters hired by her label wrote the song Can The Can
for her. The song was a huge success in Europe, Japan and Australia.
She also recorded the Elvis Presley song All shook up. When Elvis
heard it, he invited her to Graceland, but she refused.
In 1977 she
got an offer to record seven episodes for the show Happy Days.
She accepted it and took a break of her Japan tour in order to
record these.
In 1978 she
married her guitarist Len Tuckey. The couple has a daughter called
Laura, born on September 23rd 1982. In October 1984 their son
Richard Leonard was born. The marriage lasted till 1992, when
they got divorced.
In the meantime
she had terminated her contract with the label RAK with the result,
that she wasn't so successful anymore. The only exception is Stumblin'
In witch she recorded together with Chris Norman and topped the
German charts in 1978.
In 1985 Andrew
Lloyd Webber offered her the main role in his musical Annie Get
your Gun. She accepted it and performed at the London West End
Theatre for a couple of years till she started her tour through
the Soviet Union in 1989.
In 1993 she
married again. Her second husband is the German tour promoter
Rainer Haas.
She still
records music. From time to time she performs in musicals or hosts
radio shows.
