Davy
Jones
As
a member of the legendary band, The Monkees, DAVY JONES is one
of the world's most recognized performers.
Born December
30, 1945 in Manchester, England, DAVY first acted in a school
production of Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship as a race horse
jockey, DAVY appeared in two television programs, June Evening
and Coronation Street, and in BBC Radio's play There is a Happy
Land. When he landed the role of the Artful Dodger in the new
London musical, Oliver!, DAVY began moving toward America. His
performance took him to the Broadway production, and an appearance
on the Ed Sullivan show, the same night as The Beatles' American
Debut.
Recognizing
DAVY'S greatest talent, Colpix Records signed him to a recording
contract. Continuing his television appearance on shows such as
Ben Casey and The Farmer's Daughter, DAVY'S popularity and talent
garnered so much attention, that Screen Gems created an opportunity
that would boost DAVYS career into the stratosphere - The
Monkees.
From 1966-68,
the television Monkees became a real musical group, recording
nine albums, with 10 Top 20 hits. Their success was nothing short
of a phenomenon. DAVY sang some of their most popular hits including
"DAYDREAM BELIEVER", "A LITTLE BIT ME, A LITTLE
BIT YOU", "I WANT TO BE FREE", and "VALLERI".
After recording
his last album as a Monkee, DAVY pursued a solo recording career
with Bell records and MGM. Simultaneously, DAVY revived his role
as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! and made television appearances
including The Brady Bunch and Love American Style. In 1975, DAVY
joined with Micky Dolenz and hit songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby
Hart for the Golden Hits of The Monkees tour. DAVY and Micky teamed
up again as acting partners in Harry Nilssons play, The
Point, in London's West End.
Monkee fever
struck again after Arista released Then And Now: The Greatest
Hits of the Monkees. Monkee marathons followed on Nickelodeon
and MTV. Three of the original Monkees recorded a new album, Pool
It, and embarked on a 1986 20th Anniversary Tour which lasted
through 1989. Davy continued to work on the road in the early
90's as a solo artist, playing Fagin in Oliver! and Vic Fontaine
in the touring production of Grease.
